With this design, I was looking to capture the beauty of contrasts. I chose the four aces to represent mastery over fate. I chose the Ace of Spades to carry a skull because it’s historically seen as a symbol of both death and mystery. The idea being that in our lives we all play the hand we’re dealt, and in most cases the outcome is uncertain. The roses below add an aspect of beauty, reminding us that life is beautiful and that even in the darkest times, there’s light waiting at the end of the tunnel.

While drawing this design, I had in mind a person who, despite all odds, shows strength in facing life’s uncertainties. I used the dot-work shading technique to help bring this idea to life, giving it a dusty yet elegant look. The skull, cards, and roses together represent resilience, beauty, and courage. This design will be perfect for someone who’s willing to embrace both the light as well as the dark aspects of the journey we call “life.”
